Rarely am I blown away by the hairstyles in movies, but I must say the team that styled The Great Gatsby was spot on with hair and styles of the time. The finger waves were absolutely perfect and the fantastic scarves that accentuated the flawless bobs we’re equally amazing. The women were bold, beautiful, dainty and perfect with a sprinkle of glitz and glam much like the actresses of that time like Clara Bow, Gloria Swanson and Louise Brooks. The men’s hair was just as amazing. Slight undercuts with pieces falling down here and there (especially when emotions were running high) a la Clark Gable, John Barrymore or Buster Keaton. Grooming cream played a huge part in the men’s looks, probably with a little pomade mixed in for the shine. I’m looking forward to cutting a lot of “Gatsby” inspired bobs this season (slight graduation, chin length), with a slight twist depending on the texture and movement of the hair, of course. No write up about “Gatsby” style hair would be complete without mentioning the caps, headpieces, barrettes and ornate headbands that adorned the fabulous hairstyles. All in all it looks to be a fun season for hair!

The bob… Razored and updated
Every so often a bob takes the nation by storm. Remember Victoria Beckham’s a-line? Perhaps you rocked that look. Gwenyth Paltrow’s lob (long bob)? Maybe you wore that style too. Lately, I’ve been seeing a fresh, new take on the lob… The razored bob. It’s been around for, well, it’s been around forever, but it’s finally taking front stage. Not only are we seeing this style on celebrities like Scarlett Johannson, Diana Agron and Julianne Hough, but we’re also seeing it on local beauties riding Muni trains and strolling the various streets and neighborhoods of San Francisco. The great thing is you can wear this look pin straight, textured for a grungy / beachy look or simply blown dry smooth. The razor bob is ever so versatile and fun to wear. Couple it with buttery highlights for summer or an all over rich hue for fall, the razored bob will have you turning heads wherever you go.

Side Parts… How low are you willing to go?
With side partings, how low can you go? The hot “new” part is an extremely low side part that starts anywhere from the middle of your eyebrow to the end of the brow. This is not a look just favored by the trendy, hipster girls here in San Francisco, it’s also worn quite exquisitely well by our male counterparts. Just a stroll down Mission Street, with a watchful eye, you’ll realize it’s everywhere and smile knowing that you’re “in the know”. There are a couple ways for the femme fatales and dashing gents to wear this look. The first way is to start the parting super low (far end of the brow) and pull the hair across your forehead, like a bang you’re peeking through. The second way is to make the side part more of a “power” part (middle to end of the brow) and just wear it super flat and smooth, possibly tucked behind the ear. The side part is just flat out sexy, and sexy is always “in” and on point.
